This guesthouse is another one that isn't a winery hotel, but that's so close to the vines – there's a vineyard literally on the doorstep – that it may as well be.
It also produces one of the best cool-climate Shiraz wines in the country. These wines are available for tasting at the cellar door, where you may get recommendations from the knowledgeable cellar door personnel. This is one nice vineyard, yet it's only a little over an hour from Melbourne.

There is a large cellar door and tasting room inside Helen and Joey Estate, but if the weather is good, the best seats in the house are outside on the terrace, overlooking the vines and gently rolling hills. If the winery isn't slammed, you might get lucky enough to be able to work your way through the wines on tasting in this spot. If you'd like to nosh as you sip, you can also get snacks and charcuterie, and you can of course buy a bottle or two to enjoy in your primo location – plus a few to take home. Metal wine racks are also more affordable than traditional timber as the fabrication is less labour intensive.

Stocked Cellar completed the job, the cellar is now full and looking awesome. I believe he saved my client time and money, and if the bottle we opened at handover is anything to go by -there will be plenty of great drinking to be had over the years. You won’t find a bad bottle at his highly-aesthetic St Kilda liquor store. The friendly staff are happy to walk you through their niche arsenal, and for an extra personal touch, many bottles even have written reviews hung around their necks. They’ve also got Chappys potato chips to pair, which we all know is a good idea. There are a few Blackhearts and Sparrows across Melbourne, so there’s no doubt you’ve come across one in your travels.
