But is single vineyard village wines a good idea, or just another ... On the palate the wines has very fine textures and freshness that comes from both the soil and the fine acidity structure. The wines are  never overripe, but retain their suppleness la crema and finesse. There is a pronounced Coche style, but this does not prevent the individual vineyards terroir to shine through. They are terroir wines but have a quite distinctive style that characterizes all the wines from the domaine.

Sandwiched between Puligny-Montrachet and Volnay, Meursault’s wines naturally vary from plot to plot, they have the potential to show the polar opposites of richness through to great elegance and delicacy. This season was marked by an optimal balance of warm days and cool nights, a perfect scenario for nurturing the Chardonnay grapes to  their fullest potential. The resulting wine exhibits a rich palette of flavors, from ripe citrus to toasted hazelnuts, all underpinned by a vibrant minerality that is a signature of the region. Most of those are bottled without vineyard/plot information, but two of them, Chevalier and Rougeots, are sold with with the vineyard mentioned on the label. So in reality we are 5 to 6 versions of his generic village Meursault that one may encounter when tasting / buying wine in different countries. On the palate, this Meursault is a testament to subtlety – showcasing a vibrant acidity countering lush fruit, culminating in an impressive finish that lingers like the last notes of a nocturne.

Clearly it is not such a high new oak percentage (around 50%), but given an average 22 months in barrel it is time enough for the oak to flex it’s muscles. The 2018 vintage in Burgundy was defined by its precociousness; a season that flirted with extremes yet yielded wines of surprising poise. Meursault Les Rougeots exudes intense aromas of honey, toast, and hazelnut. The palate is rich, rounded, and extremely precise. This wine should be aged for 10 years before drinking. Aromas of sweet red cherries, raspberries and spices introduce the 2022 Meursault Rouge, a medium-bodied, satiny and lively red with a pretty core of fruit and good persistence on the finish.

Village wines blended or single vineyardIt seems like a growing number of producers in Burgundy are producing single vineyard village wines, thus changing the tradition of blending the village wines in to one cuvee. For some producers it’s an old tradition, but for others it’s a new approach.
